My Teacher is a Monster

Brown, P. (2014). My teacher is a monster. New York: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.

Bobby and Ms. Kirby don't like each other. He thinks she's a monster and she can't stand his behavior. Then one Saturday they bump into each other at the park. After a series of events, they both start seeing each other differently. She sees good in him and Bobby doesn't see her as a monster anymore..at least until Monday at school.

Visual Elements: Line
This book uses lines to show movement when Robert throws the airplane and when Ms. Kirby’s hat is blown away by the wind. It also shows balance when Robert’s chair and the rest of the class are the same size while the teacher is large. It shows distance between Ms. Kirby and Robert as they are sitting next to each other on the park bench. It shows that the line between teacher and student can’t be crossed. But in the end we see that it can be drawn together.

Evaluative Criteria: Theme
This story shows theme because the Bobby sees his teacher as a monster only when she is in school and not letting play with his airplane in class. When he runs into her at the park, and saves her hat from flying away she shows kindness. For the first time he sees her as a sweet lady. They spend time together and they enjoy each other’s company. Then they return to school and she gets mad because he’s playing with the plane again and all of a sudden she’s a monster again. Just because someone does not let you do what you want does not mean they are monsters. They are doing it for you well-being.
