The Three Pigs
Wiesner, D. (2001). The three pigs. New York: Clarion.
The Three Pigs is a modern retelling of the traditional Three Little Pigs. The three pigs build their homes and the wolf comes to huff and puff. The twist is the when the wolf huffs the pigs leap out of the story page and land in other stories as they try to escape the wolf. The story ends with the three pigs and their new friends safely in the brick house.
Visual Element: Texture
This story was a great example of texture. When the wolf blew the pigs out of the story they became 3D and realistic instead of simple drawings. Then out of a flat black and white story came an awesome 3D dragon with green scales. A cat and his fiddle also joined the 3D party. You can compare the realism with flat drawings, it really makes the story come alive. The characters are literally falling off the page. It’s awesome to see the different contrasts.
Evaluative Criteria: Setting
This book shows different setting with the pictures. They jump from place to place both in other story books as well as out of books. At one point they even ride the setting. They even make the reader part of the setting, when the pig says “I think… someone’s out there.” At the end they come back home in their own story and brick house.
