This is Not My Hat
Klassed, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Somerville, Massachusetts: Candlewick Press.
This is Not My Hat is a story about a little fish who decides to steal a hat and believes he can get away with it. He tries his best to tell himself its ok to keep it. As he swims through the tall plants, he seems to blend in, and camouflages himself. Just when he thinks he's gotten away with it, the rightful owner shows up and reclaims what is rightfully his.
Visual Elements: Color
The use of color in this story helps to show emphasis on the characters. We start off with a small light brown fish and his gray hat. Then we are introduced to a big dark brown fish who is looking for his gray hat. Along comes a red crab, who is a tattle tell. Then come the colored plants who help camouflage the fish. The way the author used black to bring out the colors of the characters was brilliant.
Evaluative Criteria: Illustrations
The illustrations in this book really tell the story. If you look at them without reading the words you can tell what is going on. The facial expressions of the fish who lost his hat are magnificent. The illustrations take you through many emotions. The placement of the pictures are creative.
